Foundation Stage

Early Years Foundation Stage

Children in the Reception and Nursery classes follow the Foundation Stage curriculum.

Staff use the government’s Foundation Stage Curriculum Guidance to plan children’s learning under six areas of learning:

Communication, Language and Literacy
Numeracy
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Physical Development
Emotional and Social Development

In the Foundation Stage children are taught by staff providing them with a learning environment with an active curriculum based on children’s natural curiosity and desire for exploration and play. Children engage in learning both inside the classroom and in our dedicated outside learning area. Children are encouraged by the staff to experience the full range of learning opportunities either on their own, in pairs or small groups. At particular times the children will come together for teaching in a class group.

In the reception year, children are also taught aspects of the National Primary Literacy and Numeracy Strategies in addition to the Foundation Stage Curriculum.
