Absences and Attendance
At William Byrd we place great emphasis on punctuality and attendance. We expect every pupil to attend school regularly and on time.
If for any reason, pupils are unable to attend school, you must telephone the office on the morning of the first day of absence, to inform the school that your child is absent. On return, pupils must bring a note from a parent/guardian to explain their absence. Please note, the school operates a First Day Calling System. This means that if we have not been informed of a child’s absence, an automatic phone call will be generated, which will repeat throughout the day until a parent/guardian contacts the school.
The school and the Education Welfare Officer closely monitor attendance and absence. Figures for each are reported to parents in the child’s annual report. Irregular attendance and frequent lateness are followed up by the school and if necessary passed onto the Educational Welfare Officer.
If a pupil needs to leave the school during the day for a medical appointment, parents/guardians should notify the class teacher in the morning and then report to the school office to pick up the child and complete an absence form. Upon return the child must be signed back in at the school office.
Parents who wish to take their children out of school for a holiday must fill in a holiday application form obtainable from the school office. All holidays must be sanctioned by the school; otherwise parents risk the possibility of their child being removed from the school roll. Parents may be invited in to discuss their request with the Headteacher.
